St Paul's Circa 1901

The first service of the Episcopal Church in Brady was held in the school house by Bishop Elliott in about 1884.  The following year a lot was purchased for a church building. Mr. L. Ballou was appointed trustee of the property.  Later Bishop Johnston appointed Mr. W. D. Crothers also a trustee.
Services were held from time to time by visiting clergymen in the court house, school, private homes, and the Methodist and Christian churches.  The Reverends Grantham, Wilson, Martin, Roone and Mercer were among those who served the mission in this period.  During the 1890s efforts were made to raise funds to build a church.  The original lot was exchanged for property in the 300 block of South Church St and St Paul's Church was built in 1900 and 1901.  At that time services were held by the Rev. R.S. Dodd, a priest from New York City who moved to a Texas ranch because of ill health  As the interior of the church was not completely finished, it was never consecrated.
For the next twenty-five years the work of the church was carried on by a devoted group of the laity with services conducted by visiting clergymen once or twice a month.  A Church School was started, and later a Women's Guild.  Active in the growth of the mission during this period were Mr. and Mrs. L. Ballou, Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Crothers, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Bell, Fritz Haberer, Miss Annie Haberer, Miss Clara Ballou, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Brook, Mr. Harry N. Cook, Mr. and Mrs. G. Rollie White, Mr. and Mrs. John E. White, W.H. Ballou, and Miss Marie Crothers.  The Rev. John Power came from Brownwood for services from 1905 through the early 1920s.
In about 1925 the Rev. James T. McCaa came as the first resident Episcopal minister in Brady, and served in the mission until 1943 when he was succeeded by the Rev. H. Evans Moreland.  In 1946 St Paul's became a parish, and the Rev. Moreland was elected Rector.  The first Vestry included J. Frank Roddie, A.N. Walker, G. Rollie White, F. Sheridan Newman, Otto Frederick and H. Mason Crocker.  Mrs. H.L. Wood, who had served the mission as treasurer for a number of years, continued in that capacity.
The Rev. H. Walter Whichard, Jr., became Rector in July 1947.  Soon thereafter a congregational meeting was held to discuss plans for building a new church.  J. Frank Roddie was elected chairman of the Building Committee and Otto Frederick chairman of the Finance Committee to raise funds for the new church.  Walter Cocke, Jr., A.I.A., of Waco was engaged and work began on plans for a church and parish house to be built at the corner of 11th and Blackburn Streets on a lot given by G. Rollie White.  Ground was broken in May, 1948, and the first service was held on Christmas Eve of that same year.  The Rev. William Douglas was Rector of St Paul's when the church was consecrated on Oct. 14, 1962.
In 1971 the new Educational Building was erected in memory of Mr. and Mrs. G. Rollie White, Mr. Charles T. White and Mrs. I.O.K. (Mary Brook) Kothmann.  A new Rectory was started in the beginning of the year in 1973 and was finished and dedicated on September 19, 1973.
